Douglas recognized the potential of Internet-based retail in the perfume market, and decided to launch an eCommerce site that would allow end customers to order from the massive collection of perfumes and accessories available from Douglas. After an extensive search for technology and fulfillment partners, Bertelsmann was selected as the service provider of choice.

the strategy

Within a few months, the Bertelsmann eCommerce Solutions team in New York developed and implemented an eCommerce website. This was possible by re-using previously developed software solutions and existing processes. The basis for www.douglasbeauty.com is the Bertelsmann Media Store - an Oracle-based e-commerce platform originally developed for BOL. ECS continues to monitor and maintain the site on an on-going basis.

Bertelsmann also implemented the logistics and call center processes and solutions. Responsibility for logistics will lie with Bertelsmann Marketing Service. "For this we have developed a scalable logistics solution for Douglas", explains Frank Maurer, CEO at bE-Commerce Service. Due to the high proportion of expensive merchandise stored here, the warehouse is secured with an optical face-recognition system for staff.

Bertelsmann Marketing Service used their call center in Dortmund for managing customer service where - depending upon the level of business - up to 20 staff will be assigned to handle Douglas. Bertelsmann Financial Services in Dublin is in charge of accounts and debtor management and will prepare the monthly accounts for Douglas. The hosting of the complete platform will be administered at Bertelsmann's computer center in Gütersloh.

Currently, thousands of new customers register at the site (www.douglasbeauty.de) every month, generating tens of thousands of orders per month.
